Lake Superior or Tracy Map

This detail can be related to the map images below. The Jesuit Mission of St. Francis Xavier, at Green Bay Wisconsin, was established in 1669.

The Jesuit Lake Superior map was published in Paris in the early 1670s. There are said to be four states of this map known to exist. As can be seen below, the later states have more information on them, the earlier ones, less. States of the map earlier than 1669, the year it was established, would not have the St. Xavier Mission on them.

Whoever forged the map "discovered" in 1844 used as their prototype for the upper part of the map an early state of the Lake Superior map. It was at the St. Xavier Mission that Marquette, in 1673-74, was supposed to have created his map. However, the mission at which the map was supposed to have been created is not on the "real" Marquette map.
